China's PLA Navy forms Liaoning aircraft carrier strike group for drills

China's PLA navy: The People's Liberation Army Navy serves as the maritime branch of China's armed forces, responsible for naval defense, fleet operations, and maritime security across key waterways. It operates major assets including aircraft carriers such as the Liaoning and regularly organizes strike groups for coordinated missions. In this development, it has assembled a Liaoning-centered strike group to execute training exercises in the western Pacific as part of its established annual readiness program. • The Liaoning group conducted carrier-based flight operations and coordinated ship-air drills. • Reported training objectives included air defense, anti-ship strikes, support missions, rescue operations, and live-fire exercises. • Chinese authorities described the activity as part of the navy’s annual training plan and said it was not directed at a specific country. • The western Pacific deployment expands the operational context beyond China’s coastal waters and tests sustained carrier-group coordination. • Japanese ships and aircraft reportedly monitored or tracked the group during the deployment, adding regional security sensitivity.
