ASEAN countries accelerate oil stockpiling, renewables targets amid Iran war
Summary
Asian countries are moving quickly to enhance their oil stockpiling capacities and accelerate the transition to renewable energy in response to the supply risks highlighted by the ongoing Iran war. Southeast Asia, which previously received 80% of the oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz, is particularly vulnerable, prompting regional coordination among ASEAN members, Japan, and Australia to develop oil stockpiling systems. The Philippines, which relies heavily on oil imports, plans to establish a national oil reserve by the end of 2027, with potential to expand it into a regional stockpile. In addition, ASEAN members have pledged to increase the share of renewable energy to 30% of total primary energy supply and 45% of installed capacity, reflecting a commitment to enhance energy security while addressing climate change challenges.
